Getting Started

Welcome to PEN Play

What PEN Play is, how the portal and the game fit together, and who it's for.

PEN Play helps children learn and grow through play. There are two parts that work together:

  • The Whartels game - a mobile app your child (or your learners) play on a phone or tablet. This is where the actual playing and learning happens.
  • The PEN Play portal - this website. It's the dashboard where you set up children, follow their progress, track their mood and wellbeing, and manage your account.

The game sends everything the child does back to the portal, so you always have an up-to-date picture of how they're doing - which skills they're mastering, how much they're playing, and how they're feeling.

Who the portal is for

The portal is built for four kinds of people. You choose which one you are when you set up your account, and you can hold more than one role if it applies to you.

  • Parents - add your own children, link their game, and follow their learning and wellbeing at home.
  • Teachers - join your school, organise learners into classrooms, and track the class.
  • Therapists - register your practice, run playgroups, and monitor your clients.
  • Account holders - whoever pays for a subscription manages billing and seats. This isn't a role you pick; it's added automatically when you own a billing account.
Note

This help centre covers everything parents, teachers and therapists need. If you're brand new, start with Creating your account.

What you'll do first

  1. Create your account on the portal and verify your email.
  2. Choose your account type - parent, teacher or therapist.
  3. Set things up - add a child and start a subscription (parents), or join your school or practice (teachers and therapists).
  4. Link the game so your child's play flows into the portal.

Each of these has its own guide. Follow them in order and you'll be up and running quickly.
